Accounting for the “Known Unknowns”: Incorporating Uncertainty in Second-Stage Estimation

چکیده
Recent political science research has seen a surge in interest in estimating latent variables (including ideal points of legislators and judges, political sophistication, and democratization) using item-response theory modeling and other factor-analytic techniques. These models offer several advantages over summated scales and other techniques, but one of these advantages—having an estimate of the uncertainty in our measurement of the latent variable—is often discarded when these estimates are used in second-stage models. Here I demonstrate a technique known as simulation-extrapolation estimation (SIMEX) for incorporating uncertainty into latent variable estimates. I then compare estimates using standard estimators such as ordered logit and binary probit to their SIMEX counterparts incorporating uncertainty. These results demonstrate the value of including known error variance in second-stage estimates without the added complication of using structural-equation model approaches. *This paper is based on preliminary research presented at the 2007Meeting of the Society for Political Methodology, University Park, Pa.; I thank the participants in that meeting (particularly Michelle Dion, who also reviewed this manuscript) for their helpful feedback on this project.

Inflation and Inflation Uncertainty in Iran: An Application of GARCH-in-Mean Model with FIML Method of Estimation
This paper investigates the relationship between inflation and inflation uncertainty for the period of 1990-2009 by using monthly data in the Iranian economy. The results of a two-step procedure such as Granger causality test which uses generated variables from the first stage as regressors in the second stage, suggests a positive relation between the mean and the variance of inflation. However...
متن کاملManager Optimism Based on Environmental Uncertainty and Accounting Conservatism
It is expected that more accounting conservation (environmental uncertainty) reduces manager optimism. Prior research, however, has struggled to establish this relation empirically. Moreover, some evidence points to the possibility that the manager optimism is lower for firms with more accounting conservation. In this paper, the author examine the link between accounting conservation, environme...
متن کاملIrrigation scheduling and winter wheat grain yield estimation under precipitation uncertainty – A case study in Badjgah area (Fars Province, Iran)
Addressing deficit irrigation scheduling (DIS) for strategic crop production (especially wheat) under precipitation uncertainty is a priority for irrigation scheduling in drought conditions. This research investigated the precipitation uncertainty by enacting optimistic and pessimistic scenarios for the next 20 years by considering the statistical record of climate in Badjgah area. DIS was cond...

In this paper an efficient three- stage algorithm is developed for software production cost and time estimation. First stage includes a hybrid model composed of COCOMO and Function Points methods to increase estimation accuracy. Second stage encompasses paired comparisons matrix of analytical hierarchy process to determine amount of any resources consumed in each step of software production by ...
متن کاملScheduling of Electric Vehicle Charging Station for profit maximization of Vehicles and Station in Uncertainty
Abstract: In this paper, the electric vehicle (EV) charging station scheduling process is designed to maximize the profit of EVs owners and the station operator in two steps. First, a complete model is proposed to formulate the problem of charging and discharging EVs at charging stations in one-day-ahead 24-hours. The purpose of the program is to increase the profits of EVs owners charging stat...
